Shooting in the ATC is taught as a sporting discipline, which asks the cadet to apply marksmanship principles which they have been taught. There are two types of rifle the ATC use; the Lee Enfield Number 8 which is lighter .22 version of the older No. 4, and the L98a1 (soon to be replaced by the L98a2) is the cadet version of the SA80 which is currently in use by most of the British forces.

Essex Wing occasionally run a shooting day where you get the chance not only to work on your marksmanship with both the No. 8 and L98, you also get to experience clay-pigeon shooting and air rifle shooting.

Before you get to shoot you have to pass a basic test and every 6 months you must pass a weapons handling test, just to make sure that you can use a rifle safely, to protect yourself and others. At 158 we have our own rifles and range at the Squadron HQ.
